[Europe Trip #1] Ljubljana Travel Guide | The Complete Guide to Enjoy the Old Town and Lake Bled in 1 to 2 Days 🇸🇮

You can read about my previous trip to Zagreb, Croatia here:

Ljubljana is about two and a half hours by bus from Zagreb, Croatia.

Compared to other routes in Europe, this is a relatively short journey, and the bus ride is comfortable enough that it does not feel exhausting.

This stop also marked something important for me.
I finally completed visiting all of the former Yugoslav countries.

After traveling across the Balkans for quite some time, especially coming from Serbia, it honestly felt like reaching a major milestone.

Where I Stayed: Dragons Dream Hostel

If you are looking for great value accommodation, I recommend Dragons Dream Hostel.

I stayed for 6 nights and paid 95 euros in total, which is about 15 to 16 euros per night.

The hostel is capsule style, and it was surprisingly clean for this price range in Europe.

After constantly moving between cities and booking everything about a week in advance, I reached a point where I just wanted to slow down.
This place was perfect for that.

There are desks in the common area where you can work, and you can also stay productive inside your capsule.

It works well even for digital nomad style travel, and the WiFi is reliable.

The only downside is the location. It is a bit far from the old town, so walking takes some effort.
But in exchange, you get a quiet and peaceful environment, which I personally appreciated.

What Makes Ljubljana Special

Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia, but it feels very different from other European capitals.

It is often described as a compact and highly livable city, and once you visit, it makes sense why.

The atmosphere is calm, relaxed, and never overwhelming.

Another unique feature is its identity as the city of dragons.

According to legend, the Greek hero Jason defeated a dragon in this region.
This story became part of the city’s identity, and today, dragons appear everywhere as a symbol of Ljubljana.

You Only Need One to Two Days

One of the best things about Ljubljana is how efficient sightseeing is.

The old town is compact, and you can explore almost everything in one to two days.

Even better, you can do it all on foot. No complicated transportation needed.

Dragon Bridge

Dragon Bridge is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city.

It was built in the early 1900s and features impressive dragon statues that have become a symbol of Ljubljana.

It is also one of the most popular photo spots, and a place you should not skip.

Franciscan Church of the Annunciation

Located in Preseren Square, this church stands out with its beautiful pink exterior.

It was built around 1660 and is based on the religious theme of the Annunciation, when an angel tells Mary she will conceive Jesus.

Among all the buildings in Ljubljana, this is easily one of the most photogenic.

Triple Bridge

Right in front of the church, you will find the Triple Bridge.

As the name suggests, it consists of three bridges side by side.

The central bridge was built in the 19th century, and the side bridges were added later to handle more foot traffic.

Today, it is surrounded by cafes and restaurants and serves as a lively gathering spot.

Ljubljana Castle

Ljubljana Castle sits on a hill overlooking the city and dates back to the 11th century.

Unlike many castles, it was mainly used as a defensive structure rather than a royal residence.

Over time, it also served as a prison and storage facility.

Now it is open as a museum, and you can explore inside.

Be prepared though.
It is large enough that walking around can be tiring.

You can hike up or take a cable car, and the view from the top is one of the best in the city.

What I Ate

Klobasarna

This is a famous spot for Slovenian sausage called kranjska klobasa.

I tried jota, a traditional soup with sausage, and it was perfect for cold weather.

The place is small, so it is easier to visit alone or be ready to sit outside.

RozaSlon Center

During the trip, I suddenly wanted Asian food and found this place near the station.

The staff seemed Thai, and I had authentic Pad Thai, which was a pleasant surprise.

When traveling long term, having a place like this for a reset in flavors is incredibly valuable.

Lake Bled: A Must Visit Destination

About one to two hours from Ljubljana by bus, Lake Bled is one of the most beautiful places in Slovenia.

The lake was formed by glaciers and features a small island with a church in the center.

The scenery is romantic, peaceful, and almost unreal.

It is also close to the Alps, which makes the air feel fresh and clean.

Important Tip for Getting There

Take a bus to Bled from the bus terminal near Ljubljana station.

However, be careful.

There is a bus terminal located on the upper right side of Lake Bled marked in red, but it is risky to assume the bus will go all the way there.

In reality, the bus passes along the lower side of the lake and continues toward another direction, toward Bohinjska Bela.

Make sure to get off when the bus stops near the lakeside marked in blue.

If you miss it, you may end up walking uphill for about an hour.

Bled Castle

Bled Castle sits on a cliff above the lake and has over one thousand years of history.

Originally connected to the Holy Roman Empire, it served as a religious and strategic site.

The view from here is absolutely breathtaking, and it is the best place for photos.

There is an entrance fee, but it is well worth it.

Church of Saint Mary and the Wishing Bell

Located on a small island in the middle of the lake, this church can only be reached by boat.

Boats require cash in euros, so be prepared.

Inside, there is a famous bell known as the wishing bell.

There is a touching legend behind it, and it is believed that ringing it will grant your wish.

There is also another bell in the tower that rings every hour.

A Place I Missed: Postojna Cave

Unfortunately, I did not have time to visit Postojna Cave.

It is one of the most famous caves in Europe and stretches about 24 kilometers.

What makes it unique is that you can ride a train inside the cave.

If I come back to Slovenia, this will be at the top of my list.

Final Thoughts: Ljubljana Is the Perfect Balanced City

After spending time in Ljubljana, I realized something.

This city is perfectly balanced.

It is compact and easy to explore
It is more affordable than Western Europe
Nature like Lake Bled is nearby
The atmosphere is calm and relaxed

It may not be flashy, but that is exactly its charm.

If you are traveling across Europe and feel like slowing down,
Ljubljana is the perfect place to reset.

And with incredible nature just a short trip away, it is ideal for anyone who wants to enjoy both city life and natural beauty.

My relaxed stay in Ljubljana comes to an end here.
Next stop is Venice, Italy.
